New Brunswick Announces Draft Regulations for Community Economic Development Investment Funds

Educational listCEDIFs are pools of capital from individuals, corporations and trusts within a defined community that are used to operate or invest in businesses within the defined community – a big boon to local CED initiatives. CEDIFs have been used with great success in other jurisdictions – since 1999, Nova Scotia has seen 48 CEDIFs established, mobilizing 7500 investors, with total assets at more than $56 million. Read more >>

Comment on the Consultation Draft of Provincial/Territorial Capital Markets Act and the Draft Initial RegulationsMike Toye

British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Yukon and Canada are jointly engaged in the implementation of the Cooperative Capital Markets Regulatory System (Cooperative System). The consultation draft of the CMA was initially published for comment in September 2014. This marks the first publication of the draft initial regulations. The comment period will run until December 23, 2015. Read more >>

The idea for this State of Rural Canada report came about in order to draw attention to rural challenges and opportunities, and to provide a source of information and a platform for information sharing. The chapters of the report focus on the rural trends within each province and territory, ending with a summary discussion chapter that provides a series of recommendations for advancing rural development in Canada. Since the financial crisis, interest in new types of money has surged. Projects like Bitcoin have hit the headlines as communities around the world experiment with their own currencies and methods of exchange. In this new and innovative field, we have only just begun to understand and measure their impact.

It is no coincidence that community currencies have rapidly risen to prominence in the years following the financial crisis. When the conventional monetary system foundered, alternative means of exchanging time and goods were created to plug the gaps. Read more >>
