Platform Cooperatives: Workers can get fair share for services

Call it gig economy, sharing economy, or platform economy, at the end it is the worker who delivers the services. Is the worker paid fairly?

Tutors, artists, bookkeepers, childminders, interpreters, health-aid workers, maids, you name it, all immigrant and refugee workers from diverse backgrounds will be affected by the new economy; working as “dependent contractors” at a disadvantaged position between fulltime employment, and professional contracts. The policy makers and courts are taking notice; it is time workers should take notice and make worker-owned platform cooperatives. Mobile & digital technologies have made it possible not only for private companies like Uber, but for workers too, like .

Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham got funding from Ontario Trillium Foundation for Worker Cooperative Development. Iffat Zehra, the Cooperative Developer, is helping workers to understand this new economy, and create worker cooperative platforms. Come and learn every Wednesday from 3pm to 5pm at Ajax Business Centre, 274 Mackenzie Ave., Ajax, L1S 2E9. Snacks & bus tickets will be offered.
