This immersive workshop offers a deep dive into understanding climate emotions, building community resilience, and empowering participants to take tangible steps toward climate action. Aruzhan (Aria) Kani and Abhay Singh Sachal with Break the Divide, will guide participants through a journey to grasp the concept of environmental identity. Through personal experiences with the environment and climate change globally and within Canada, attendees will gain insights into their relationship with these issues.

This workshop is part of the STARCAP Climate Action Fall Workshop Series. Live ASL interpretation will be available at this event.

Participants will also delve into Break The Divide’s Climate Emotion Circles model, reflecting on their connections and experiences with the environment across identity, community, climate, and emotions. By the end of the session, participants will emerge feeling more connected with one another and equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage in meaningful conversations about climate emotions in their own communities. Ultimately, they will be empowered to drive positive change within their communities.

About the Facilitators

Aruzhan (Aria) Kani is a Program Manager at the youth-led Canadian non-profit Break The Divide, managing two of their programs: the Climate Emotions Program and the Climate Skills & Community Building Fellowship. Aria is a University of Toronto graduate with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology and International Relations. She was born and raised in Kazakhstan but has been based in Toronto for the last several years. Aria’s research interests include social and organizational psychology and the role of international organizations in the allocation of power and the relationship dynamics between authoritarian and democratic states. She is passionate about supporting youth and marginalized communities, especially in the areas of climate action and mental health. In her free time, Aria enjoys journaling, photography, and exploring cafes and restaurants in Toronto.

Abhay Singh Sachal is a 22-year old Canadian whose research and work resides at the intersection of climate change, ecoanxiety, mental health, and spirituality. He is the founder of Break The Divide, a non-profit organization that empowers young people with resources to understand climate emotions and connects communities to build resilience and share knowledge amidst the climate crisis. Abhay is also one of 10 advisors in the inaugural Environment and Climate Change Canada Youth Council. Outside of his activism, Abhay is currently a student at the University of Regina, completing a Masters of Education in Educational Psychology; a public speaker on environmental and climate issues; and, an avid ice hockey player and pianist.
