Local Organizing for Fair Economies Community of Practice

Join a conversation to explore how local organizing principles and approaches can contribute to the creation of more sustainable, fair and inclusive economies

April's conversation will be on "Local Organizing for Small Scale Innovation":

Some of Canada’s strongest local organizing to create fairer economies is represented by small scale innovations, entrepreneurs, and collaborative work. The COVID-19 global pandemic is a challenging time, and we offer the Friday April 24th Community of Practice as a chance to learn and share together (virtually, as always). Join a conversation to explore how the local organizing work of small scale innovators can contribute to the creation of more sustainable, fair and inclusive economies - now & in the era that will follow this crisis.

We need your help - volunteer to share your experience Friday, April 24!

What community need is your small scale innovations addressing? What happens in communities where there isn’t a big development project to mobilize around, such as a large procurement contract or Community Benefit Agreement? We’ve also heard from rural communities in past Community of Practice discussions about the innovative work going on to address community needs that differs from larger centres. In all these instances, potentially without large development opportunities, let’s share how local people have been mobilized and engaged to contribute to small scale innovations.

Collectively, we’ll share examples of our own small scale innovative work from across the country, compare notes, and share best practices. This is a time to put our Community of Practice into exactly that - practice.

Are you willing to share your experiences at next Friday’s Community of Practice, considering the questions below? If yes, please be in touch with Michael Barkman at

Questions to consider:

  • Tell us about the small-scale innovation that you are working on.  How did you identify the need and decide to focus on it?
  • What support has been necessary or will be necessary for your success?
  • What have you learned about organizing or mobilizing people around your project?  What has worked and what hasn’t? Did any big challenges/mistakes help generate the next phase of change or learning for the community/organization?

Join us from 1:00-2:30pm Eastern Standard Time on April 24, 2020.
